Rialin José

Chicago, Illinois

I have always been enamored by the vibrancy of everyday Philippine life. In particular, I wanted to pay homage to the subtle art of laundry, or “labada,” which is what this series is titled. Through these pieces, I wanted to celebrate the meticulous and elaborate process of traditional laundry.

Rialin José (pronounced RY-lin ho-ZAY) is a Chicago-based filmmaker and illustrator. Her work often reflects her Filipino background, as she explores and honors her roots. Rialin is also the author and artist of the ongoing webcomic, Parya. Her weekly comics highlight moments from her life as a first-generation Filipina American. Rialin is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago with a degree in film.
