This piece is currently on display in the Northbrook Public Library‘s 22nd Annual Northbrook Originals Art Exhibition, which runs through May 31, 2026. Part of the Longform Mobile Photography Project

It’s not the tool; it’s the artist. From 2014-2021, Jenny Lam captured photos using only her iPhone 5s. She demonstrates that you don’t need fancy equipment—not even a tripod—to take beautiful photos.

Much of this longform project served as a photographic love letter to Chicago, featuring photographs she took around our wonderful city throughout the past decade. Petal—shot while looking looking down at the staircase in the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago—is one of the very first images from this enterprise.
